Glory be to God who made it possible to continue in the series we started six weeks ago. This week,we are considering KNOWLEDGE as the number six vail or covering preventing so many people from seeing God,their Creator.
During the period of writing these series,I had the grace to discuss some issues with a Professor who happens to be a Christian.I raised this issue of knowledge as a possible covering that prevents people from seeing their Maker. He wasted no time to declare that as a believer,he finds it difficult ,sometimes,to have a simple faith in God.He said that his knowledge, more than often, conflict with his faith-leadin to inner-war within him.He can’t lie about himself in this case.It is always like that with people who allow their knowledge to dominate them.
During a voyage to Rome where Apostle Paul was taken to face trial in company of other prisoners, danger loomed;loss of lives and properties was imminent,so,Apostle Paul advised,
‘Men,i perceive that this voyage will end with disaster and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also our lives.
Nevertheless the centurion was more persuaded by the helmsman and the owner of the ship than by the things spoken by Paul.’ Acts 27:10,11 New King James Version(NKJV).
That is knowledge for you.Who was Paul to be obeyed? A prisoner,a preacher who knew nothing about voyage;a man without any authority.Thank God that he knew his Maker that has every knowledge.God keeps His secrets with Him but reveals them to those who fear Him,(Psalm25:14).The secret of the impending disaster was with God and Paul,His servant but not with the helmsman and the ship owner-people of knowledge. What was the outcome of what they knew?
‘Now when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest beat m us,all hope that we would be saved was finally given up.’ verse 20.
In most cases, this is the outcome of knowledge:failure. It has a limited extent it can go.It results in loss of hope.As from this point,Paul, who knew his God took over saying with authority,
Men,you should have listened to me,and not have sailed from Crete and incurred this disaster and loss.
And now i urge you to take heart fo there will be no loss of life among you,but only of this ship.
For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, saying ”Do not be afraid,Paul, you must be brought before Ceasar;and indeed has granted you all those who sail with you”;Therefore take heart, men, for I belive God that it will be just as it was told me.’ Acts27:21-25.
Not only this, when men of knowledge, the sailors, wanted to save their lives alone leaving the soldiers and prisoners in the ship,Paul came in again,he told the centurion and soldiers,
‘Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.’ verse31.
Paul warns in 2Timothy3:7-9,’…always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth…so do these also resist the truth :men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith;for their folly will be manifest to all,…’ 2Tim 3:7-9.
The foolishness of those that increase in knowledge without truth will always manifest, here or hereafter. Those who resist the truth will one day know it,whether before or when it is tn late.
May God remove every vail of knowledge that prevents people from seeing their maker.
The words of Dr Fulton J. Sheen in his book ‘Life of Christ’ summarise this point thus,
‘Only two classes of people found the Babe;the shepherds and the Wise Men;the simple and the learned;those who knew that they knew nothing, and those who knew that they did not know everything. He is never seen by the man of one book;never by the man who thinks he knows. Not even God can tell the proud anything! Only the humble can find God!’
